Meet your biology tutor
My journey into biology tutoring comes from both my academic background and what I’ve seen students struggle with firsthand. I specialise in breaking down complex biological concepts into simple, relatable ideas using everyday analogies. Join me as we build true understanding together.

My journey: from academia to inspiring students
Having studied Biomedical Sciences at University College London, followed by an MRes in Experimental Neuroscience at Imperial College London, and completing a PhD in Neuroimaging at King’s College London, I’ve spent years deeply immersed in science at a high level. Throughout that journey, one thing became very clear to me: even at top universities, many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because the fundamentals were never properly understood.
That realisation was the turning point. I saw how often biology is taught as something to memorise, rather than something to truly understand. And when students don’t grasp the basics early on, everything that follows becomes harder and more frustrating. That’s what inspired me to start tutoring. I wanted to bridge that gap — to take complex scientific ideas and make them simple, relatable, and accessible.

Thinking like an examiner: your secret weapon
One unique thing I do in my lessons is train students how to think like an examiner. Most students lose marks not because they don’t know the content, but because they don’t understand how answers are marked. I explicitly teach students how to interpret questions, identify command words, and structure their answers in a way that hits mark scheme points every time.
We regularly practise with real GCSE-style questions, and I show them what examiners are actually looking for, how to avoid common mistakes, and how to turn a “half-right” answer into full marks. The result: students stop guessing what to write and start answering with precision and confidence. It’s often the difference between a grade 5/6 and a grade 8/9.

From struggling to succeeding: a student's journey
One example that really stands out is a student who came to me working at around a grade 4, feeling completely overwhelmed by biology. They were putting in effort—revising regularly—but nothing seemed to stick. When we started, it became clear why: they were trying to memorise mark schemes without actually understanding the underlying concepts. Topics like enzymes, cells, and genetics all felt like disconnected pieces of information.
What we did: I went back to basics and rebuilt their understanding from the ground up. I broke topics into simple, relatable analogies, focused on why things happen, not just what happens, practised exam-style questions every session, and taught them how to structure answers for maximum marks. The turning point: after a few weeks, things started to “click.” They began explaining concepts in their own words, linking ideas together, and approaching questions with much more confidence. By the time exams came around, they had moved up to a grade 7.
My philosophy: understanding = excellence = success
I don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Every student is different, so I adapt my teaching style to suit their personality, pace, and way of learning. Whether a student needs more structure, more encouragement, or more challenge, I adjust accordingly. I create a supportive, pressure-free environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, focus on building confidence as well as knowledge, and push students to reach their potential—but in a way that keeps them motivated, not overwhelmed. My goal: not just to help students pass exams, but to help them believe in their ability, enjoy learning, and develop skills that go beyond biology. At the end of the day, when a student starts feeling confident and says “I actually enjoy this now” — that’s when I know I’ve done my job properly.
